Boxing News from Australia and Beyond

For those Australians who have a love for the sport of boxing, below is a list of some of the latest boxing news that you might not be aware of.  Take a look and get informed about some of the most interesting boxing news at home and around the world.

Mayweather vs Marquez

Were you aware that the September 19th bout between Floyd “Money” Mayweather” and Juan “Dinamita” Manuel Marquez will be shown in HD at more than 160 theaters nationally?  The Pay Per View fight which will take place in Las Vegas.  This means that, thankfully, you won’t have to travel all the way to America to see watch the fight live.  All you’ll need to do is go to a participating theater, pay the$12 to $15 dollar ticket price, sit back and enjoy.

Danny Green

This next piece of boxing news will excite fans of Danny Green.  The Australian championship pugilist is set to take on Roy Jones Jr. in Sydney this coming fall.  The fight, to be held on an as yet unpicked date in November, will be for the cruiserweight championship.  Danny Green “The Green Machine” is a hometown boy who hails from Western Australia.  There will no doubt be tons of fans that come out to lend their support to their fellow countryman.  Bear in mind that Aussies will have to play host to the many fans of Roy Jones Jr. who are sure to show up as well.

Women's Boxing

Ladies will especially love this bit of boxing news:  women’s boxing will be featured at the Olympics in 2012 which will be held in London.  There will be three weight classes:  flyweight, lightweight, and middleweight.  While the heaviest of the women’s boxers won’t get a chance at Olympic gold, women everywhere have to admit: this is a step in the right direction.   We’ll have to wait and see who’ll emerge as frontrunners among the Aussie women to receive the nod to represent Australia in the summer of 2012.  I told you this was boxing news women would love!

Ali

Whether you are an Aussie or an American, chances are if you love boxing, you also love Muhammad Ali.  The legendary boxer has been chosen as the “greatest sports star” by Alpha magazine.  That’s right, Australia’s leading sports magazine has given this coveted title to the man who could “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee” at his peak.  Heath Kelly, editor for Alpha magazine, says that Ali was a “skillful” and “clever” boxer who participated in some of the most memorable fights of the 20th century.  Amazing how much Ali is still revered in today’s boxing world.  He is an important part of the history of boxing, which makes him a continually relevant piece of boxing news.

Stay tuned for more boxing news tidbits that Australians care about and want to know.   Since the late 1800s boxing news has included Australia; and that isn’t going to change anytime soon!
